If you’re thinking about renting or buying a shipping container in Ottawa, one of the first questions you’ll need to answer is: what size should you get?

Pick something too small, and you’ll run out of space quickly. Go too big, and you might spend more than you need to or run into issues with delivery and placement.

At Cassidy’s, we’ve been helping people in Ottawa and the Valley with moving and storage for over a century. Whether you’re storing furniture, clearing out a garage, or setting up a workshop, we can help you find a container that fits your space, budget, and plans.

Standard Shipping Container Sizes

Shipping Container Dimensions

Most shipping containers come in three standard lengths: 10 feet, 20 feet, and 40 feet. They are all 8 feet wide and 8 feet 6 inches tall unless you choose a high cube container, which adds extra height.

Here’s how each shipping container’s dimensions and sizes compare:

10-Foot Shipping Containers

Exterior Dimensions: 10′ L x 8′ W x 8’6″ H
Good for tight spaces or small loads. These work well if you’re storing tools, seasonal items, or overflow from a garage or cottage. Since they aren’t used in global shipping, they’re less common and often cost about the same as a 20-footer.

20-Foot Shipping Containers

Exterior Dimensions: 20′ L x 8′ W x 8’6″ H
This is the most common size of a sea container. It’s easy to move and fits in most driveways or yards. A 20-footer offers a solid amount of space without being too hard to deliver. A great option for a shipping container home.

40-Foot Shipping Containers

Exterior Dimensions: 40′ L x 8′ W x 8’6″ H
These are best for larger storage needs or commercial use. They provide a lot of room, but they also require more space to deliver and are harder to reposition once loaded. Recommended for shipping container workshops.

High Cube Storage Containers

High cube shipping container dimensions are 9 feet 6 inches tall, giving you an extra foot of interior height compared to standard containers. That extra space can be helpful if you’re stacking items or storing tall equipment.

High cubes are most often found in the 40-foot size, but are also available in a 20-foot size.

They’re a good option for people modifying containers into workshops or living spaces, or for anyone who wants a bit more breathing room inside.

What to Consider Before Choosing a Size

Choosing the right container size depends on more than just what’s available. Here are a few things to think about:

1. How much do you need to store?

Take a good look at what you plan to put inside. Containers fill up quickly, especially with furniture, tools, or equipment.

2. Where will the container be placed?

Make sure you have enough space for delivery. A container needs to be dropped off by truck, so there must be room to unload it safely. Larger containers need more clearance.

3. What is your budget?

Generally, smaller shipping containers cost less, but the price difference between a 10-footer and a 20-footer is often small. In many cases, it makes sense to go with the larger option for better value.

4. Are your needs likely to change?

If you’re not sure how much space you need, it’s usually better to go with a larger size. Most people find ways to use the extra space, and it’s rare to hear someone say they got a container that was too big.

Other Things to Think About

5. Ground prep

A container should sit on level, solid ground. Gravel is common. You can also use concrete pads, 4x4s, or patio stones at the corners. A good base keeps your container stable and makes the doors easier to open.

6. Ventilation and insulation

Basic containers come with a few vents to help prevent moisture buildup. If you plan to store temperature-sensitive items or spend time inside, insulation may be worth looking into.

7. Security

Most containers are already fairly secure, but you can add lockboxes, internal locks, and reinforced doors for extra protection.

8. Appearance

Not everyone wants a rusty shipping container sitting in the yard. We offer containers in neutral colours like grey, green, beige, and blue to help them blend in better with your property.

Why Buy From Cassidy’s?

We’re based in Pembroke and have helped people across Ottawa and the Valley for years. Our containers are checked before they leave our yard to ensure they are solid and leak-free. Delivery is included in our pricing, and we never ask for a deposit upfront.

We’ve seen listings on Facebook Marketplace offering “new” containers at prices that don’t add up. They often don’t include delivery, or they show pictures of modified containers and list them at used prices. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

At Cassidy’s, you know exactly what you’re getting. And if you’d like to come pick out your container in person, you’re more than welcome to.
