Things to Know About Living in Yellowknife
1. Colder Weather
Yellowknife is known for its cold winters, being in the sub-arctic. Yet, Yellowknife in the winter is one of the best places to be. The air in Yellowknife is drier than Ontario, meaning you don’t feel the cold as much as you would down south. The most important thing to do when you arrive is invest in some good quality winter gear, like base layers, boots, a parka, gloves, and a winter-proof toque or hat (maybe a scarf too). With the right equipment, winters in Yellowknife aren’t that bad!
2. Beautiful Northern Lights
One of the best parts of living in Yellowknife is how often you get to see the stunning displays of the Northern Lights. This phenomenon attracts visitors from all over the world and if you live there, you get to experience this regularly right in your backyard.
3. Lots of Snow Activities
Locals make the most of winter with outdoor winter sports. Hiking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, fat-biking, and ice fishing can help anyone learn to love Yellowknife winters. There’s also snowmobiling and dog-sledding.
When it’s really too cold, hit up one of the incredible indoor sports facilities like the Fieldhouse and Multiplex for soccer, volleyball, football, ultimate frisbee, basketball, and gymnastics.
4. High Cost of Living
Yellowknife does have a higher cost of living compared to most Canadian cities, and is especially higher with housing and groceries. In fact, Yellowknife has some of the highest rental prices in Canada. That said, those costs can be offset by the higher salaries and northern bonuses that come with many jobs there.
5. Transportation
Getting around Yellowknife is a little different from Ottawa. While the downtown core is very walkable, having a car is a good idea for exploring the surrounding areas. Public transportation is available but limited. The local bus routes can get you where you’re going if you plan your trips carefully, but they don’t run as often as they do in Ottawa, and there is no O-Train.
Yellowknife is somewhat isolated, so having a vehicle is a must for road trips to other cities.
6. Too Much Light or Darkness
When it comes to daylight, Yellowknife is known for extremes. In the summer, you’ll get almost 24 hours of daylight. In winter, you see very little daylight at all. It takes some getting used to, but it’s all part of the adventure of moving to the Northwest Territories.
