The Cassidy’s Process: How It Works
- Get a Quote. We review your dates, inventory, and access at both addresses, including stairs, doorway widths, and whether a filming notice or the winter ban falls on your date. You get the quote in writing.
- We Pack & Load. We blanket-wrap furniture, protect floors and doorways, and load the truck so what you want first comes off first.
- Welcome Home. Boxes go to the rooms they’re labelled for, furniture goes where you point, and we reassemble anything we took apart before we leave.

Yes. A good share of our Almonte work happens in 19th-century brick and stone houses and in the converted mills, where staircases turn tight and landings are short. We flag the awkward pieces when we quote, so the right crew and equipment arrive. If something won’t make the stairs, we get creative.
We check the Town’s notices before your date is locked in, since street events and productions are usually posted in advance. If a closure overlaps, we often stage the truck at the nearest open access point and shorten the carry, or move the start time. You hear from us beforehand, not on the morning itself.

The Local Advantage: Why Experience Matters
An Almonte move isn’t a shorter version of an Ottawa move. Downtown is heritage-designated and was initially laid out for horses rather than five-ton trucks; parking rules change with the season, and a film crew may already have booked your street.
Here’s what we figure out proactively, so there are no big surprises on moving day:
Downtown Almonte is a designated Heritage Conservation District under By-law 16-61, and the old Victoria and Thoburn mills along the river now hold condominiums. Lovely to live in, but a little awkward to move into. We plan for tight stairwells and doorways framed long before sectional sofas existed, and when furniture just won’t fit up the stairs, we get creative.
Parking in Mississippi Mills is capped at 3 hours on the street and 4 hours in municipal lots. From December 1 to March 31, on-street and municipal lot parking isn’t permitted between 1:30 a.m. and 7 a.m., and the same overnight ban applies the rest of the year whenever snow or freezing rain is forecast. No moving truck permit is required, so we plan our moving truck’s parking in advance.
Almonte is one of the busiest filming locations in the region, with dozens of productions shot around Mississippi Mills. During a shoot, stretches of Mill Street or Bridge Street can close, and on-street spaces get reserved, but the Town posts notices. We check them while your date is still being set.
Set Up Your Utilities in Almonte
These are worth figuring out before the moving truck arrives:
- Electricity (Ottawa River Power Corporation): ORPC is the local distributor for Almonte (not Hydro One) and keeps an office at 12B Mill Street. Start, stop or transfer service online.
- Natural Gas (Enbridge): Much of Almonte is on natural gas, though many rural addresses across Mississippi Mills run propane, oil or electric heat. Confirm your address, then open an account if it applies.
- Water & Sewer: The Town bills water and wastewater every other month. Give the Tax and Water Clerk your closing date so a meter reading is scheduled for the day of sale. Outside the village, most homes run their own well and septic.
- Garbage & Recycling: One container a week goes curbside without a tag, and extras need one. New residents receive free bag tags and dump passes with the welcome package at the municipal office. Topps Environmental Solutions collects garbage, and Circular Materials Ontario administers recycling.
- Town Bills: Property tax accounts and paperless billing are set up directly with the Town.
